History

Long, long ago when the world was still new, the unicorn race was born.  It was said in the medieval era that these creatures were something of magic - bound to nature and could heal anything. And in the modern Era it was told that unicorns were fickle, playful things.  Preachers claimed that Noah’s ark could not take them for this reason. But this is not the truth. Unicorns don’t drown. Rather, they loved the sea.

Unicorns were not from our land, no, and theories that state they were made on the plain earth soil is false. What I’m about to say now is fact, and I should know as a unicorn myself. Hmph… as I was saying. Unicorns love the sea, as they were born from it. There is another realm that exists in the fine line between the air and the ocean - a land we call Aphlantis. This is the land the unicorns flourished in, a place they wished to die and for their children to be born and to give way to their own lives and continue the unicorn line. And for many centuries, thats how things were. The unicorns lived in their realm and they went through life peacefully. Unicorns however, were not all good hearted and there were some that craved power, at least this is how the story was told to me. I’ve learned that as pure as unicorns think they are - they’re good at twisting things. You might find yourself stories you know so well about this land… about this chevalin aren’t as true as you once believed. But my my! Look how distracted I’m getting. Now as I was saying, there were unicorns who wanted power and one of these unicorns - was a pure black unicorn named Baba Yaga. She had always been on the outskirts of the herd, and yet some thought she was royalty. As you’ll find out - unicorns with royal blood are born with two horns. And Baba Yaga was a unicorn with two horns when alas she was not in the royal circle. The truth in that, as I said, is still questioned till this day. Baba Yaga, decided that the crown did not belong to the current holder - a young and bold unicorn by the name of Valraldic.  Baba Yaga, the black unicorn had grown jealous of the young crown in her years. Some say it was because she longed for power, others because they were once friends, some even say that she was a banished lover. No matter the cause, Baba Yaga was ready to take over and the black mare released her power - a gift still unknown and unspoken of to this day. Within a night - half of the Aphelion herd was under her control. All that was left for the crown and the remaining unicorns was to flee. And so finally, the Aphelion herd came to Chevalin.

What they found was nothing like their home. The air choked them, and war surrounded them. They had fled one chaos, to another. And it is here that that chevalin’s recorded history begins. The Olde herd tells the unicorn’s entrance as nothing short of Godly. The unicorns were angels coming from heaven to save them. The Bachelors call it a fairytale, the exiles - well - who knows what they believe of the fables of the Unicorn kind. What I’d like to tell you is the truth… and while this history isn’t that of all the unicorns - you deserve something. The story I know best you see… is my own.

I was born with the name Vihn-Valeriana as niece to the king of unicorns. I had taken pride in that name.. and was born to a loving family, with a mother that could care for no one more than Me. I was supposed to grow up in the world of the unicorns - with my family leading my way to knowledge and happiness. But I have already told you of the fate of the unicorns. I was only a few years old when it happened. Baba Yaga took our world away from us, and sent us to the mortal world.  It was a day full of sadness, all of the proud and the steady held their heads low as they walked into the portal  - into the mortal world, and out of its sea. That day would be known as the day the great compromiser came to chevalin. I would become one of the first unicorns to grow up among mortals. And so I learned a different view of the world than my mother and father before me.  As far as I was concerned, Mortal horses were just another breed of unicorn. Yet, we always were taught to separate ourselves from the lower equine kind. I was told that we were better because of our horns, and better because we had a magic they did not. I never quite understood this until I hit my 50th year, and learned to harness my first gift. Having the sixth sense made me feel powerful, but the abilities bestowed upon me could have only been chosen by fate. You see,  my gift would change my life forever. My family was fairly disappointed, how could a young bright unicorn of royal blood have such a basic minor gift? But I was thrilled. I wanted to prove to them that perhaps the gift I was born with was being taken for granted.  How wrong they were indeed.

It had been a few months after I received my gift and I had been strolling through the woods on my own, and was surprised to detect three horses nearby. It was here as I krept up on them, I witnessed for the first time a unicorns death. I had never seen red blood before, and the silver running through my viens went cold. For the killer was my own uncle: the King Valraldic. To this day I don't know what justice he thought he was enacting on the poor soul, but I knew then that something dark welled within the forces of the Aphleion Blessing. For the first time in my life, I was scared.

Time went on and I found myself trying to forget what I had witnessed, and I believed that things might return to normal. That was until the chevalin year 100, and many of the mortals among as were banished into exile. I began to loose faith that the unicorns were as pure as we believed again. The final straw however was during my 150th year, the year 145. Horod the magic eater, a young and honorable young mortal stallion confronted the now aging great compromiser. He pleaded for a chance to be free, he didn’t hate the great compromiser, but life under a dictatorship simply wasn’t for him. He asked for a blessing to cross the land bridge and live with the exiles. To my horror Valraldic lay an X on the innocent horses head, and banished him. Even worse… the mortal horses of the Olde herd didn’t bat an eye. To them, The great compromiser was god.

Something had to be done.

I received my second gift a few weeks after the banishment of Horod, Telekinsis and elt ready to confront my leader. I explained to him that treating the horses as lesser beings was incorrect. He was furious, and threatened to kill all of the newly outcasted horses if I ever brought up the idea again. As he was doing them a favour, he was letting them live without his dictatorship.I wanted to believe him.. i truely did. But when outcasted horses that followed Horod evolved into the Bachelor herd, and The Great compromiser decided that destroying the newly born herd was a must- I knew his heart was without good intention. He  was afraid ofcompetition, of another power greator than he.

When I  confronted him again, and on that day begging to let them live in peace something terrible happened. My horns were broken off in an instant display of banishment. I was declared a unicorn no more, as I would not submit to the views of my king.  But something peculiar happened on this breaking of my lovely, lovely horns.... They were not only broken at the base… they were ripped out. And while excruciatingly painful,  this ended in  something the Great Compromiser never expected - an unleashing of My  true power as a unicorn. Every unicorn grew up learning that his inner power was channeled from inside, but no one knew that it also acted as a block, meant to channel just enough energy from the soul to make magic.

On that day I took on the name Ba’yagu, as tribute to the mare who had originally sent away my herd. I wondered on that day if perhaps she was trying to protect someone as I had been then. So on that day, I used this unleashing of power to seal away the unicorns to a place from which they could never return….  The crescent. I sealed it with a magic that only a mortal horse could break. And until this day, I have remained,  since the year 151,  the only unicorn on the land of chevalin.

In the year of 401 however, the Loner mare Miraphy came incontact with the wall, and broke the seal that had locked the magic horses of chevalin away for so long... and not even I can know what happens next.

Quick Timeline

Year - 5

Five years before the unicorns came to chevalin, they lived in a peaceful land known as Aphlantis. It existed in the place between land and sea and was known for absorbing the magic of other worlds.

Year Zero (0)

The unicorns are banished from the land of Aphlantis, with no knowledge of how to return to the magical land. They set out to learn of the new chaos-ridden world they were banished to - and aim to bring order to the horses around them.

Year Four (4)

Within four years of setting foot on Chevalin, the Aphelion Blessing and their leader Valraldic form a meshed herd of mortals and unicorns. This would be known from now on as the Olde herd - as the unicorns meant to teach their mortal cousins in all the old morals of Aphelion. However, the mortal horses looked upon the magical unicorn as a god, making it easy for Valraldic to abuse his new power.

Year 50

The lord and king Valraldic, was now worshipped by the mortal horses whom he'd saved from Chaos. They began to call him the great compromiser and would bow in his shadow. But not all horses were as respectful as the majority of his followers. Some had dark intentions, some could even be considered evil. History says that Valraldic tried to convert them - teach them in the ways of good for many years.  History says he had tried until he was sure that there was no hope left. It was one fateful night when a particularly troubled stallion known as Arryn stole from the king. Knowledge of what he stole has since been lost over the years - but all remember the effect this night had on the future of the Olde herd.

That night, and in the following weeks Valraldic called upon a trusted adviser of his with a special gift: the gift to see morals as auras. he had ever member of the herd stand before her - and if they failed her test they were banished to the southern most land. These banished horses would become known as the Exiles.

Year 150

Time passed and for the most part, the lives of the mortals and the unicorns played out peacefully. The Olde herd flourished on their land and payed little mind to the exiled horses in the South. Many intramortal relationships occured - and magic had long since began to spread its way to the mortal horses of Chevalin.  However, the life of the Olde and Aphelion herds would not remain peaceful for long. When a stalllion known by the name of Horod came to council with the long reining Valraldic. Though he had lived under the herd's rule since his birth - the stallion yearned to explore a world that was not under the rule of a unicorn king. He, and a few of his own followers, asked permission to venture off into the world - to be on their own. Valraldic was furious, for to him the lacked the appreciation he deserved. Still - he gave them what they wished. Slashing their heads open with X marks on their fore-heads - he banished them to the middle Island. They were never to return. Horod's banishment changed the world for the horses forever.

Year 151

A close relative and apprentice to Valraldic had long since been upset by his actions toward the mortals and found that she could no longer stand to see the horses treated as lesser, unimportant beings.  She rose up to her king - and challenged him. What she had meant to be a simple council turned into a battle that no one expected - and ended in tragedy. Her horns we're ripped out during the battle in what might have been devestating to any other unicorn - but instead unleashed an unknown ammount of power from her being - enough to seal the unicorns away forever.

Year 151 Continued

Furious at his defeat - Lord Valraldic used his own gift to erase the memories of his followers . He was sure that none must know of his failture. He claimed the seal that kept them on the Cresent Island protected them - and that the world around them was a dangerous place full of evil beings that would taint their souls.

Year 402

The Seal is broken and the unicorns are released from the crescent.

The Aphelion Convention

Please note that some laws  of the Aphelion unicorns are incredably ancient, while others are relatively new.  Most of the new laws were made after the great compromiser wiped the memory of his herd, which he claims are there to protect them.  Laws and Customs that were set in place before the  Aphleion blessing was sealed away  on the crescent will be denoted with a BB for Before Ba'Yagu. Those laws created after they were locked  will be denoted with a AB for after Ba'Yagu.

BB = Before Ba'Yagu

AB = After Bayagu.

It is much like in christian religion where things are considered before or after the death/birth of christ.

.

**** 1. AB: Leaving the island without permission from the king or queen will result in extreme punishment, depending on rank. A unicorn will not mate with the mortal horses, an offspring of the two is considered a disgrace.

**** 2. All unicorn foals are required to undergo extensive training in magic use and the traditions of the royal family. This also includes studies on unicorn history. A foal will be taught to unlock his or her first gift at 50 years old, and will be marked with their rank tattoo, unless he or she is of royal blood.  50 years old in unicorn is equivalent to 14 as a mortal.

Note: Royal blooded horse's are giving their rank within three days of birth

*** 3. An unseelie unicorn is not to use his or her gifts against any others of the herd. Dark magic is to be practiced with benign intention. (BB)

* 4. One whom is outcasted cannot be redeemed, just as a their horn can never regrow from his or her head. (BB)

** 5. Thou shall not steal from thy herdsmate (BB)

6. BB** Those of a royal bloodline may not be seen socializing with those of lesser blood unless accompanied by someone of higher status. In the case of the king and queen, they must be accompanied by 2 or more who serve directly beneath them and/or one other family member.

*** 7. Those of lesser ranking must give their utmost respect to the King and Queen.  Royalty is to be treated with reverence and awe.  Fraternization with the royal family is unthought of and unwarranted. Marriages of young princes and princesses are decided only by the king and queen themselves, and it is very rare they choose a non-royal horse. (BB)

Customs and Traditions

Ancient, Proud, Powerful

An ancient herd nestled in the hidden island known as the Crescent, Aphelion is a blessing that has lasted the ages. No one in particular knows where they come from, except perhaps the great compromiser himself... all have been on the mortal world almost to long to remember.

The Great Summoning (Holiday): Once every four years all unicorns are to report to the royal summons of the King and Queen at the Well of Miracles. Those who are both a part of the Aphelion herd and even those who are banished arrive in great numbers and is the only time of year that those who once belonged belong again. The royal heads take count of every body to arrive; new and old, making note of those born and those who have passed. Those who do not show are assumed dead and as law requires, will be executed if found otherwise (so you better show). During this time, banished unicorns have the right to challenge their banishment and if deemed worth may be reaccepted by the herd. But this is not only a record of those who wander the 4th island but also a celebration of life. The celebration lasts 3 days, with dancing, stories, and a chance to come together. On the final night of the summons, all are to be silenced under the night skies as a sign of respect and during this peace, the Well of Miracles will alite itself with a glowing magic (to speak will disturb the peace and the magic will leave). The following morning, those who do not belong to the herd will depart and if they do not leave, will be driven off.

First Breath's Ceremony (Custom): Foals are born two ways among unicorns, in the mortal way and the traditional way. Either by Blood or by Womb. When a foal is born between unicorns the mortal way he or she is bathed in the pool of the well of miracles after his birth. If he or she is to be born in the traditional aphleion way (both unicorns cut eachother with their horns into the ocean) the blood of the mated couple will drop into the well giving birth to the new unicorn foal.

Typing of Gifts (Tradition): Gifts have always been seen as either Dark, Light, or Neutral to the unicorns of Aphelion.  A unicorns first gift will decide if he or she is Unseelie or Seelie because of this. Those born with a dark gift are considered Unseelie, while those with a light gift are considered Seelie. Neutral gifted unicorns are allowed to choose their rank, and study in the dark or light arts. Because unicorns get two gifts, their first gift MUST be scarce or common. Their second can be of any rarity. Note: While the USER can choose his/her characters first gift, he/she must still note the group asking for it. The second gift must be given in the same way mortal gifts are.

Dark Gifts:

Bat Ears, Blood Manipulation, Demonism, Divine Necromancy, Electric Manipulation, Empathy, Force Fields, Frost Manipulation, Intangibility, Invisibility, Mediumship, Necromancy, Night Vision, Reality Manipulation, Shadow Manipulation, Shapeshifting, Time Manipulation

Aphelion Ranks

The ranks of aphleion are ranks that have stood the test of time and have been ingrained in the histories of the unicorns for ages past.  Since anyone can remember the different ranks have been symbolized by a tattoo. Royals are given their tattoo at a young age - usually within their first year of life. Seelie-types are given theirs on their 50th brithday. For seelie-types and high royals the tattoos can be anywhere on the body. For lesser royals the tattoo  should be on the front half of their body if they are an overseer, and the hind half of the body if they are a confidante.

If an unseelie or seelie unicorn becomes outcast for any reason, their tattoo is scarred off. For both high and lesser royals, the same is true but a triangle and circle pattern is tattooed over it to further their shame.

From left to right are the coressponding tattoos | High Royal, Lesser Royal, Seelie, Unseelie, Outcast, Outcast.

Special Information

Aside from being more magical then their mortal cousins, unicorns have some other special attributes you should keep in mind when creating or roleplaying yours! Please look carefully over the bullet points below before creating your character.

Horns: Unicorns have horns. This seems like common sense . Unicorn horns can be of any color - and can even look like other natural materials. Unicorn horns can also be of any shape or size within reason. ROYAL unicorns have two horns. Lesser Royals have 25% chance of dual horns. If you want one please ask when you take your quiz and an admin will roll the dice for you.  All other unicorns have a singular horn.

Tails: Tails can be of any type as long as they represent mammal tails. Pleasing nothing aquatic or reptilian or avian!

Blood: Unicorns bleed silver. Unicorns that have half or less mortal blood may have blood that turns red when it hits oxygen. However a full blooded unicorn's blood will ONLY turn red if they are dying.

Colors: Unicorns are almost never black in color. It is highly encouraged that you design your unicorn to have a light coat color such as perlino, cremello, palomino, medium to light chestnut, or medium to light bay.

Age: Unicorns age differently than mortal horses.  Please reference this chart before when aging out your character.

The only rule this cannot be applied to is the first convention, the half-unicorn clause. All half-blooded babies will still be seen as disgraces and are not allowed under any circumstances.

Finally, your major gift is at its full potential, congratulations!
