History

It was not long after the Great Judgment Day that created the Exile herd, where the Bachelor’s history began. The exile of the criminals brought upon a new era for the horses of Chevalin. For so long, the mortal equine had lived unquestioning of the Great Compromiser and his unicorns for they had provided them with security, compassion, and leadership. Now, not all were so sure. It made them ask a question: if the Great Compromiser had sent away the criminals, what would stop them from doing the same to others who misplaced their hooves? A young stallion named Horod was one of those who had his doubts. Once an unquestioning follower, the tall stallion had served the Great Leaders every need. Yet he saw the unicorns scorn of the criminals as unjust and unnecessary; for banishment surely meant death to them all.

Still wanting to think the best of the unicorns, Horod confronted the Great Compromiser with his concerns. He pleaded with him to allow them to return and repent their sins once again. Yet the anger the now exiled horses had stirred within the Great Unicorn Leader was far too great and he accused Horod of blasphemy, challenging his leadership. In what is said to be a crazed fit, the Great compromiser marked an X on Horod head, and claimed that this mark would forever label him a traitor. So Horod left the Isle of Olde.. seeking refuge in new lands.  Several stallions followed Horod, looking up to him as a mentor and powerful role model, in hopes that they too would not be subject to the unicorns rule. In celebration of their breakaway they marked eachother's heads with the infamous X.

Over the course of Horods life, he and the stallions traveled the two south most isles sharing the land with the banished criminals. The days were tough, fighting for food and land with those who refused to band together to survive. Yet slowly, the group of stallions began to grow; their skills ever improving. The fighting made them strong, young warriors and their noble deeds were well known among the nomads.

It was Horod’s successor and son, Rehmal, that set the band of horses apart from the exiled. A much stricter and more demanding stallion, Rehmal was revered for his great power. Yet among his herd, he was known for his kind heart; especially his softness for his daughter. His rule changed drastically after his daughter was found murdered. Fueled by grief, Rehmal lead his horses across the land in an attempt to find his daughter’s killer and nomads who did not belong to his band were often driven off or killed. The band of mostly stallions spread fear in their wake and few began to whisper the name of the small group: bachelors. The name stuck to the horses that traveled with Rehmal and his successors; the Bachelor Herd. Still, the group was small in number and as Rehmal died, so did his desires. Time passed and Cezeer became leader, a weak and lazy stallion who brought glory to no one - and thus through smoke and mirrors, Cezeer's second in command Ghangis was named leader.

It was Ghangis’ rule that changed the whole of the Bachelor herd. Far from noble, he seized control from Rehmal’s son, driving him off. A power hungry Ghangis leading his new band of ever growing horses to war with a desire to rule the Eastern Isle. His conquest was swift and cruel, taking in slave mares to do his bidding. They were subject to his every desire yet none barred him any sons to succeed his throne. That is until he lead a raid to capture an Olde herd queen. Her first foal was indeed a colt who would grow up to instil the most lasting and well known tradition of the Bachelor herd.

Ghangis’ son, Fungus, was raised under the laurels of his father but still he was always inadequate to the power hungry stallion. A sickly foal from birth, Fungus struggled to live up to the expectations. Thrown into power after his father’s sudden death, the well spoken stallion made a point of enforcing the laws his heritage laid down but drought crippled the land, sending the herd into starvation. Desperate, Fungus took it upon himself to weed out all those who were not strong enough, marking each foal that dropped with an X shaped scar the founder Horod once bore across their face. If the foal was strong enough to survive, they were worthy of living within the herd. Noticing that fillies often died after the marking, Fungus called a halt to the tradition deeming the mares too weak and casting them to the outskirts of the herd. Those that followed Fungus's rule kept the tradition, even as the drought ended, creating the Bachelor herd that is well known today.

Fungus, sickly as he was, did not manage to sire any colts, leaving the herd leaderless upon his death. His two highest Elites, one of the Scavenger faction and the other of the Infantry faction, decided that they would have a fight to the death to determine which would rule in Fungus' absence. With the Infantry commander lying dead at his hooves, Titus claimed the throne, so to speak, and was thus first to establish the 'fight to lead' tradition in the Bachelor herd. Titus was extremely misogynistic, and realized that females born to their herd were dying in droves due to the 'X' marking. He called for the ritual to be preserved only for males, as it was them that were strong enough to fight through the pain and make it. This further caused division between stallions and mares, as mares began tumbling rapidly from favor and their lives worsened.

Jacob, Titus' son, continued this tradition when his father passed warring with a nomadic herd of Loners that were passing through unbidden. Jacob's rule was one of the longest in the history of the Bachelor herd, and it was under him that many of the current traditions and customs of the herd were created. One such custom is the Moon Risen Rolic, which Jacob implemented when he realized that in spite of the lack of marking, the female population of the herd was dwindling. In an effort to get the female numbers back up, so the stallions had mothers for their offspring, the first Rolic was had and it was at that time that Jacob stole himself an Olde queen, much like Ghengis long before him. As one would imagine, this was the start of war between the Olde and Bachelor herds, though it was settled quickly due to the standing infantry that the Bachelors maintained, and the fading of the land bridges.

Current Happenings

Klaus, the lone son of Gemini, was raised in tumultuous times, with a father that was suspcious of him and a mother that certainly made it that way. A lifetime of paranoia and a little too much intrigue seemed to catch up with Klaus, as whenever the land-bridges would rise, the stallion felt compelled to check them to ward off any intruders on Bachelor land. Klaus took it upon himself to take half of the herd to the Northern landbridge, while he assigned his most trusted adviser, Vladek, to take the other half south.

Upon reaching the northern shore, he found the Olde herd there lurking, in his mind alerted from the lack of smoke rising from the Southern Isle. Convinced that the Olde herd was intending to traipse through his territory, Klaus stood firm. For days they waited and watched as the Olde refused to budge from their station on their shores, and finally the land bridge began to rise.

Klaus and a few of his most trusted horses walked out onto the land bridge to confront the Olde herd and the messengers they sent. One stallion overstepped his bounds but managed to capture two of the other herd's mares before Klaus encountered the Olde king, Vasska, and his bizarre fortune-telling companion Obscura. War was declared as the landbridge started to shatter below their hooves and the herds were forced to go back to their own islands, the Bachelors with two new members in tow.

Meanwhile, Vladek and his half confirmed that smoke ceased to rise from the Southern Isle, and Vladek had every intention of scouring what was left for survivors. Little did they know that while they were searching, the Exiles had already made their way over. Once discovered, the Exile captain Kanu made a deal with Vladek for the safety of the Exile herd, now that their island was burned to ash. Seeker was thus traded to the Bachelors in exchange for their stalemate. The deal required one mare or colt be traded every full moon, as long as the Exiles decided to remain on Bachelor territory. With their new aquisitions, the south-searching party returned north and met with Klaus', the herd rejoined, and war preparations began.

Klaus was plagued by his paranoid thoughts, and started more and more to seek isolation from the herd. He would leave hours at a time, talking to no one at all. Slowly these jaunts became longer, and he would leave the herd for days. Eventually, Klaus stopped returning, his deevolution complete. After being left in limbo for some time, the mysterious loner Cain asserted himself as their new leader in Klaus' absence.

Not a herd that was welcoming to outsiders, or to change, Cain's rise to power was a rocky one to start. He was inscruitable, and spoke to no one for long periods of time, however he ruled justly and began to name his few elites. Grudgingly, he kept Vladek at his side, and continued the preparations for war. He dispatched a few training parties to allow newer, younger stallions to hone their skills, and another party to take the mares to the Summer Fields where they would be safe from harm while chaos unfolded around them. Cain himself took the loudest of dissenters to the Riddle Mountains to force a talk between them, so they could understand what he was about, and he could get a feel for their own concerns. While no one was harmed on this venture, it was a difficult trek and trust continued to falter. Upon Cain's return to the main herd, he realized that the two captives of the Olde herd had been recaptured, however it did not seem to be of any concern to him. His entire mind was wrapped around the war that he had decided to claim as his own.

With none allowed fully into the confines of the new leaders' mind, Cain summoned his elites to accompany him to parley with the Exiles that continued to live on Bachelor territory. He asked for their leader Cael in exchange for their safety, allowing the Exiles to trade one important mare for indefinite time of the Eastern Island, rather than forcing them to keep giving up their own herd members.

As Olde marched on the East Island, and the Exiles were turned away from the Isle of Olde, the Bachelors found themselves allied with the Exiles against Olde, and Cain finds himself somewhat indebted to their assistance. Though the war ended in a stalemate, and Cain himself gravely wounded from the experience, the Bachelor herd has chosen to regroup and prepare for the next round of attacks from the north. He remains ever vigilant for the inevitable return of the former bachelor leader Klaus, and waits for the day that the black stallion comes to reclaim his herd.

Quick Timeline

(Years always start with Winter and end with Fall)

Year 150

Horod the magic eater faces the great compromiser, and ask that he be given freedom to travel outside of the herds rule.  The great compromiser banishes him - marking him with an X on his forehead to show that he is forever an outcasts and sends him to the East Island.

Year 151

Former friends of Horod follow suit and find him on the Eastern Island. They pledge their allegiance to horod by marking eachother with the X on their foreheads - mares and stallions alike.  Together they found the herd known as the Bachelors today, though they did not give themselves this name

Year 184

Horod's youngest son, Rehmal becomes the second leader of the herd. He is stricter and much less tolerant of nomadic horses after his daughter is found murdered. He is how the Bachelor herd was named.

Year 211

Rehmal's son Cezeer, a lazy and weak stallion, takes command of the Bachelor herd, however he is manipulated by his second in command, Ghangis. Ghangis lead a mutiny against Cezeer by convincing the herd that he would bring back the honor and strength of Horod's rule, and thus banishes Cezeer. Horod's known line seems to end at that point...perhaps.

Year 221

Ghangis, Cezeer's former second in command, creates the guard stallion rank, differentiating between Scavengers and Infantry. He becomes corrupted by power, especially after the capture of the Olde herd's queen, who he sired his son on. Ghangis claims the East Island for his own, however he died suddenly while attempting to drive away a group of loners.

Year 251

Fungus, Ghangis' extremely sickly but well spoken son, inherits the herd due to his father's death. It is during his rule that a crippling drought occurs, and after realizing there isn't enough grazing land for the herd, he begins the ritual of marking foals with 'X's in hopes of weeding out the weak. However, to the public he claims that it is to honor the gods. During his reign, Fungus also finally succeeds in completely displacing the Exiles and claims all of the Eastern Island as Bachelor territory. Throughout history, he is known as being a physically strong horse, however he is more conniving than anything. Many Bachelors consider him the finest leader in their history aside from Horod and Jacob.

Year 280

With Fungus not bearing any children of his own, Titus claimed power by being the first horse to establish the 'fight to lead' tradition. Titus, once the Scavenger commander, fought and killed the Infantry commander for the position. Titus was extremely misogynistic, claiming that females died too often from the X marking, and thus they could not continue to risk the population declining. From then on, only colts would receive the X. Titus' reign was cut short by another altercation with wandering Loners.

Year 315

The son of Titus, Jacob continued in his father's hoofsteps, albeit more moderately. It was under his long, prevailing rule that many of the current traditions and customs of the Bachelors were created. During his reign, Jacob realized that the female population of the herd was diminishing, and thus started the Rolic tradition. It was during this that he also claimed himself an Olde queen, much like Ghangis, however this created a small war which was settled quickly with the lack of interisland contact and the standing army of Infantry.

Year 364

Jacob's second in command on the Infantry side, as well as his nephew, Ramses took over after Jacob's eventual passing. He was elderly, and thus his rule was shortlived and fairly peaceful.

Year 375

Gemini came to power by challenging Ramses before the older stallion had a chance to die and leave the herd to one of his many heirs. A charismatic stallion, he gained the help of Travis and Vladek to perform the coup, managing to exile Ramses and those that remained loyal to him. Vladek was chosen as Gemini's second-in-command. After finally birthing a son on a young brood, it didn't take long for Gemini to want the colt and his mother to be put to death for treasonous plotting. Vladek convinced Gemini to keep Klaus alive, which lead to the horse's eventual downfall, when the two stallions got into an altercation and Klaus knocked his father out and left him where he fell.

Year 393

Klaus rose to power, taking over in his father's disappearance, with Vladek supporting him. For years he ruled fairly peacefully, though Klaus started to sink down into his dark thoughts more and more

Year 400 Fall - His paranoia caused him to check the land-bridges for any horses that might dare to cross them from either direction, and it was this that led him to encounter the Olde herd and plunge the Bachelors into war. Angered by his lack of control over his gift that he was provided by Ba'Yagu, and surrendering to his paranoid delusions, Klaus wandered away from the herd, abandoning it.

Year 401 -  Late Winter/Spring

Watching Klaus from afar and predicting the horse to reach his breaking point soon, Cain waited patiently for his time to slip in and take over as the Bachelor leader. With Klaus off and distracted by his failed gift, and the herd being perturbed by his absence, Cain found the perfect moment to assert himself as leader.

Year 401 - Spring - Summer

After months of preparing for the war that Cain did not wish to back down from, for fear of seeming weak, Bachelors and Olde clashed on the Eastern Island, with many Exiles allied with the Bachelor side after Vasska's proclaimation. The first phase of the war ended in a tie, with Cain fallen, and more Bachelors left to fight than Olde, causing the herds to both regroup and prepare for their next phase.

The Bachelor Rule

Customs and Traditions

Barbarian, Loyal, Fearless, Powerful

The bachelors have always been known as brutish, but despite this they to have a dense culture. They follow tradition and law just as heavily as the old herd, and do so quite blindly. Most horses in the Bachelor herd don't give the ways of their culture a second thought, despite how other herds feel about it.

Day of the Golden Mare (Tradition): Once , After the night before the first moon risen rolic  per a  leader's reign, the first mare to give birth is given a special opportunity. If she gives birth to a filly she will not be immediately banished. Rather foal will be marked as a colt would. If the filly survives, the mother is allowed to stay in the herd. The filly is also given the chance to train as a scavenger or infantry horse. This is a very rare occurrence as the first mare has to not only give birth to a filly, but the filly must also survive the marking. (2/3)

Moon Risen Rolic (Holiday) This is a day where the bachelor horses raid the other Islands by the light of the full moon. Parties are organized days before, and this is day is usually looked forward to all year. While it regularly devastates the other two herds, it is a day for the Bachelor herd to replenish itself. Takes place on the first full moon of every year.

17th Year Ceremony (Holiday) For mares, this is the day that they officially become a brood. The mares usually spend the day with them, and they are allowed that day to venture out with two mares  and one stallion of their choice to any place of their choice to spend the day. The mare is usually given gifts and flower laces from her peers, tokens of luck that when she does bear a foal, he is male. For Stallions, this is the day they officially become a stallion. They spend the day sparring with other stallions, and officially choose their place as either a Scavenger or Infantrystallion. He is also supposed to mount his first mare, and may choose any unclaimed mare of his choosing.

The Marking of the Colts (Custom): When a colt is born the the Bachelor herd, he is marked with an X on his head. This does not have to be directly on the forehead though that is traditional, the cheek, over the eye, and on the nose are also acceptable forms of the X. ALL colts born in the bachelor herd must have the scar of their herd. Loners who join the herd later on do not have to have this mark.

**** Unbreakable Bond (Custom): Occasionally, bachelor horses will fall in love and secretly wish to be bonded eternally to one another, such as in traditional marriage. To complete this ritual, the two horses in question must leave the herd for a secluded location, and have obtained the necessary tools of obsidian and feathers, as well as the very rare artifact of a human skull, with its skull cap removed. Upon arriving at their meaningful spot, the horses must in turn scar one another with a carat "^" mark anywhere that they wish. It is said that the larger and more prominent the carat is, the more willing they are to suffer for each other's love, both the pain of the scar but also the ostracization from the herd. Once the wounds are opened, they must both navigate the dripping of their blood into the skull, where it mixes together. Both parties dip feathers in the blood, painting each other with their shared lifeforce, and thus the ritual is complete. While this ritual is available to both heterosexual and homosexual couples, it is forbidden to all and any horse that returns to the herd with a carat will face severe consequences.

Bachelor Ranks

Background © 2015 MariahWhy

** 1. Do not defy or question your leader, he is the strongest of the herd and is to be respected no matter the situation.

*** 2. Bachelors must ask permission from their leader to claim a mare, If the leader accepts a bachelor can claim a mare to himself for a full year cycle.

* 3. Brood mares are not allowed to leave the confinement of the herd unless escorted by a stallion, any attempt at escape is punishable and force may be used to bring the mare back even those higher ranked than slaves.

** 4. A Bachelor cannot refuse to take part in a raid, it is considered a privilege to pillage another herd.

**** 5. All colts born into the bachelor herd are marked with a an X shaped wound on their foreheads within 3 days of birth. Not marking a colt with the iconic X after birth is forbidden and seen as disrespectful towards the brotherhood it stands for. Fillies are exempt from the X marking.

*** 6. A Bachelor must make it known if he is the father of a filly, a mare who gives birth to a filly without the father to claim it may be allowed in the herd.

*-*** 7. Broodmares are to accept and obey orders without objections, no matter what is asked of them.

* 8. A stallion who challenges another stallion must decide the rules of the battle before he asks. A challenge between stallions must have a winner. This is not to be confused with playful sparring. It is also considered disrespectful to shy from a challenge from the leader.

**** 9. A mare who gives birth to a filly is banished from the herd without resources, and her filly stays within the herd. This is not true for lady's who give birth to fillies - however their filly is demoted to the slave rank.

**** 10. A slave mare MUST give birth to a viable colt within 2 years of her being captured/her 17th birthday. If she succeeds, she has 5 years until she MUST birth again, or risk banishment. A lady must give birth to a viable foal at least every 5 years, otherwise a discussion is held amongst the stallions on whether other merits allow her to stay, or if she shall be banished.

**** 11. A stallion must attempt to serve his duty of procreation for the herd, no matter what his personal sexual preference may be, or what his current relationships are - for the health and continuation of the herd is of utmost importance.

**** 12. While close bonds of friendship between males is encouraged, sexual relationships between stallions are strictly forbidden and looked down upon. The stallion that takes the role of the 'mare' during such activities will be met with even more severe scorn and will have their 'x' marking turned into four diamonds to bear their shame.

Bachelor ranks are critical to how the herd understands each other and their place in the world around them - especially in relation to other herds. The Bachelors are a strict society where social classes mean both your job and your way of life. For females, division is per birthright rather than job description, while males may choose as they age which class they wish to become. Growth in rank is challenging and requires the leader's trust, however it is rewarding if it does occur. For the most part, however, the Bachelor life is very fixed in their ranks, and there is little fluidity within thir rigid structure.

The Leader

The Bachelor King, as he will always be male, is often seen as the strongest of his herd, whether it be through physical or mental capabilities. There is no doubting the Bachelor King's commands, as his word is law. There are many ways of becoming the leader, potentially through birthright, though mostly through power and cunning.

Youngling

Younglings are colts and fillies of the age of 16 or under, who are learning the ways of their herd. They may  be foals that were captured on a raid, or those born naturally into the herd. Unlike the other herds, the foals of the Bachelor herd 'hit the ground running' so to speak, and are expected to be productive members of the herd at an early age.

At 25 Tier | Colts begin to be weaned from their mother’s side and begin to learn the art of war or scavenging from the stallions - Fillies are taught by the ladies and slaves about how best to serve stallions in a healing and helping capacity

If under the age of 17, they will receive a level 1 Kit Fox and must maintain their training until they are of age.

Elite

The Elites of the Bachelor herd are powerful stallions brought up from both the Scavenger and Infantry backgrounds, and they serve to advise their leader whenever necessary. They are chosen mostly on the leader's preference, as they must be wholly trustworthy to him, and willing to help keep the herd in check. As such, they are known to fluctuate when the herd finds a new leader. One special perk of being an elite is that any fillies that are birthed are ladies rather than slaves. They are expected to focus on strategy, or in any discipline that will aid in a battle.

At 25 Tier | Your voice now carries more weight - you may now give orders to lesser ranks as if the leader himself once assigned to specific tasks. - Applies specifically to objective events

At 50 tier |  You are now a trusted elite, and may choose to ignore one Bachelor rule - this one rule must be stated on their Tier Tracker.

Scavenger

While the infantry maintains the protection of the Bachelor herd and the precious mares that provide new recruits, the scavengers take to the offensive. They are quick on their feet and often of mind, and have the primary job of making the Bachelor herd stronger through aquisition of mares, taking part in raids, and collecting intelligence from the other herds. Often times, they are known for being ruthless and ready to plunder the other herds, however there are those who are of a slipperier sort and take the route of charming the hooves off of those who stand in their way. Scavengers are likely to train in stealth, or tracking.

At 25 Tier | You have learned to have a bit of a silver tongue - others feel more at ease around you, particularly those outside the Bachelor herd

Ladies are mares of the herd that were born to Elite stallions and raised in the Bachelor herd their entire life. If a mare that was once a lady leaves the herd for another, but then is captured or returns of her own volition, her blood status does not remain and she is demoted to a slave. Ladies are treated with a sliver of respect and are only asked to bear children and care for fillies and colts. If they do not bear a foal of their own, they will be given a slave's colt or filly to care for. They can be asked to assist from the sidelines in times of war, so many Ladies choose to learn herbal knowledge, though diplomacy also comes in handy for those wanting a bit more freedom.

At 25 Tier | Earns the right to get a ‘Little Sister’ - please note the group to be added to the list of eligible Ladies!

At 50 tier |  Earns the right to purchase a level 2 companion, or gifted a level 1 Blanford’s Fox

Slaves are mares of the herd that were either born of Scavenger or Infantry stallions, or who were taken into the herd via raiding or scouting on the East Island. They are to be seen and not heard, and are often to do more than just bear children, such as doing various chores for the stallions. They are treated without respect, and rely wholly upon the herd for safety. In times of war, Slaves are the go-tos for injured stallions, and they will never be asked to join the fray. As such, most choose to study herbal knowledge or nature knowledge.

At 25 Tier | If not born in the herd, the slave gains an understanding of her place as a brood, and starts to learn the system. OR if born into the herd, has increased understanding of evading trouble and using the culture to their advantage
